Follicular dilatation and plugging by keratinous material, folliculitis, and perifolliculitis are the most frequent histologic findings. Demodex folliculorum can be identified in the follicular ostia, buried with the head toward the dermis (Fig. 3-93).The mites have adapted to life in a hair follicle by assuming a thin, elongated shape (wormlike), and rudimentary legs.
