Use a multimeter. Set it to DCV above 15. Connect the black cable to the negative terminal and the red cable to the positive terminal of the alternator. The voltage reading should be between 13.5 and 14.5 volts. Use a voltmeter. With the engine off, check the battery voltage. It should be between 12.5 and 12.8 volts. Then start the engine and check the voltage again. It should be higher than before, indicating the alternator is charging the battery. Use the headlights. Start the engine and turn on the dipped beam headlights. Remove the minus terminal from the battery. The alternator is working if the headlights are steady and the engine does not stall.
